He came to the fore as a special adviser to Michael Gove in 2007. He then attracted further attention as the chief administrative mastermind behind the successful Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 EU referendum and, when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019, Mr Cummings was appointed as his chief aide, directing operations from Downing Street. He can largely be credited for the Conservative Party’s triumph in the December 12 general election and for delivering Brexit. Despite many successes, in the last couple of months, the Brexit guru has attracted a lot of criticism. He has been more than once accused of being “unkind” and of bullying staff at Number 10. Following reports some had sought counselling for stress last week, Mr Cummings told The Times that advisers should toughen up. In an interview with Express.co.uk, Vote Leave insider and former Ukip MP Douglas Carswell exposed why MPs and Downing Street down are wrong to criticise the Brexit guru, highlighting a fundamental flaw in Number 10. He said: “I have known Dominic very well for over 20 years. “He is incredibly driven, motivated and incredibly bright. “He has a clarity of thought that very few people in politics possess. “I only ever saw him – and I saw a lot of Dominic during the Brexit referendum campaign – talking to people with great respect.  “More than that, he was actually someone who was reassuring to the team and staff. “Even at times when things were looking pretty bad.” He noted: “Some people who’ve been in politics for too long, such as some backbench Tory MPs, believe there is a hierarchy and somehow they are at the top of it. “Dominic is a meritocrat and sometimes that upsets people. “If you are a Tory party grandee and you think you have defined eurosceptics for 20 years you might not like the new approach.  Trending  “I am sure there are civil servants and ministers in the Government who find Dominic’s style jarring. “But I suspect that actually a lot of Dominic’s critics are criticising him more for their own vanity and pride rather than what he is suggesting is wrong.” When asked what Mr Cummings’ relationship with Mr Johnson was during the Brexit referendum campaign, Mr Carswell said: “I spent a lot of time on the bus with Boris, Michael Gove and Gisela Stuart. “I know Dominic was close to Michael, but then Michael and Boris had a falling out throughout the campaign. “But that’s all forgotten now. “I’m guessing that in politics there are tensions that people don’t always see, but from what I saw, everyone seemed t
