Speaking during his daily coronavirus press conference, Mr Johnson said: “The speed of our eventual recovery depends entirely on our collective ability to get on top of the virus now and that means we have to take the next steps on scientific advice. Trending  “And following our plan we are strengthening the measures announced on Monday. “We need now to push down further on that curve of transmission between us. “And so following agreement with all the … devolved administrations, we are collectively telling cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close tonight as soon as they reasonably can and not to open tomorrow. “Though, to be clear, they can continue to provide take out services. “We’re also telling nightclubs, theatres, cinemas, gyms and leisure centres to close on the same timescale.” READ MORE Wetherspoons boss insists Britons should still go to the pub Is Wetherspoons open tomorrow? Wetherspoons has, along with all other pubs in the country, been told to shut its doors tonight. However, Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin said earlier today closing pubs and bars won’t help stop coronavirus and vowed to keep his 867 UK pubs open as long as possible. Amid reports the Government was about to order the closure of London pubs and restaurants on Friday, Mr Martin said: “My instinct is that closure won’t save lives but will cost thousands of jobs and create unsustainable costs for the UK. “I believe central London pubs and restaurants are extremely quiet but supermarkets are often very busy in the vicinity. “There are still people out and about who would welcome a drink or meal and other facilities pubs and restaurants provide. “As I understand it, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea’s successful approach to the virus has not involved closure.” The pub owner also defended his right to issue public pronouncements on the best way to contain the outbreak, denying that weighing in on pandemic containment and keeping the chain’s pubs open were irresponsible.
