Why Juneteenth Is Such an Important Holiday

Today, just a few minutes ago a another great video called Why Juneteenth Is Such an Important Holiday was uploaded by the youtube channel: radiodotcom

As informed in the video description by radiodotcom: In the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd, protests erupted across the nation sparking serious conversations about systemic racism in America.
One topic that has renewed interest is Juneteenth.
What is it?
Literally, Juneteenth is a blend of June and the 19th.
On this date in 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger and his union soldiers informed slaves in Galveston, Texas that they were officially free and the Civil War was over.
The momentous day came two months after Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender — and two years after President Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic Emancipation Proclamation, which declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”
The reason behind the delay was due to the fact that the Union presence in Texas was not strong enough to enforce the order at the time of the proclamation.
On December 6th, 1865, Congress ratified the 13th amendment which stated that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”
